Peer violence, especially if it is systematic and long-lasting, can damage also harms bystanders (peers), as has already been shown in the ripple model effect. Peer violence thus also has an impact on classroom dynamics and often on the educational institution as a whole. Work with observers is planned in the context of departmental community sessions, which can take the form of project days, special workshops.
Objectives of working with observers:
– understand that they also have an important role to play in preventing peer violence in the classroom and in educational settings
– give them clear messages that violence is unacceptable and that the educational establishment will do everything in its power to prevent it
– highlight the different possible forms of peer violence and the importance of specific context of the classroom, which singles out or punishes ‘others’ through violence.

19: WORKING WITH PARENTS
If we want to work effectively with the victim, the perpetrator and bystanders, we should invite parents as co-creators of a safe school space. We suggest that the educational establishment and parents jointly agree on the role of the individual/parent, e.g. if parents observe a child (a change in behaviour, if the child tells them that he/she is a victim of peer violence or that a classmate/peer is the victim), the parents should inform the class teacher and the counselling service or the head teacher, especially if the violence continues.
In the specific case, the educational establishment should involve parents in the treatment of the violence by:
– individual discussions with parents
– parent-teacher conferences
– lectures/trainings/workshops for parents
